I use 3 Adaptec ANA-62044 NICs for a total of 12 ports. They are 64 bit PCI
cards but run in standard 32 bit PCI slots. On one of the cards I cut off
with a saw the extended connector as some chipsets on the motherboard
prevented the card to be inserted correctly. Those Adaptec's run on Ubuntu
9.x "out of the box", but do not work on Vista, there is no drivers...

They work fine. You can have multiple NICs.

I set up a Mac Mini to do this. The built in ethernet was my
control/access port. Then I had four USB hubs and a total of twelve
10/100 USB NICs off of them to use with Dynamips.

One PC, four 3560 switches. It worked. Not nearly as cool as real
routers, but it was functional. :) In my case it was a "to prove I
could" thing, not a necessary thing.
