I personally hope that nothing of the sort ever comes to pass. Part
of the mystique of a CCIE involves that whole idea of having flown to
some far off land, done battle, and emerged victorious. That's
someone who's serious about their craft and serious about proving
their mettle. Popping off to the nearest PearsonVue test center on a
day off or over a weekend somehow lacks dramatic effect. Anybody
could do that enough times to eventually pass. And when every minimum-
wage 17-year-old on the local Best Buy Geek Squad is sporting CCIE
apparel, what will be the residual value of holding the cert?
But probably the bean counters within Cisco will eventually bring
something like this about. It would be my hope that they at least
keep things in-house at major Cisco offices. Otherwise, it's
inevitable that test centers will be easily compromised and people
will be buying digits (think 100,000+ type of digits within a year or
two) on the open market.
I personally question whether or not I'd bother recertifying if that
were to be where the program was taken. I'd simply tell interviewers
that I earned the cert back in the day when you actually had to do
exactly that...
