The desire for topologies like that is for multiple reasons...

1. each trouble ticket/problem will not be dependent on others (e.g.
separate areas/devices where things can still be messed up, but achieve
partial success)
2. No switches, so makes for more festive results!
3. Bought all those nice new big monitors and need to test out the
resolution capabilities with full screen topology diagrams. Too much
white-space was deemed hazardous to the eyes!
4. Some semblance of "real world" being seen in the scenarios given
