Hi Niklas Eastrvm,
Thanks for wishes.........
*Preparation for the Lab exam *
**
1) My first sense of CCIE came to me during when I was preparing for CCIE
(ISP-DIAL) in year 2000 and was able to pass the written. My first intention
was to clear the written as per my company that time. Then didn't had
intention for appearing the lab and even the lab for CCIE -Dial was later
expired from Cisco that year.
2) Then after a gap of 7 years,in year 2007 was planning to prepare for CCIE
R&S written and subsequently lab, gave the written and passed the same. Then
subscribed to IE materials for the lab preperation.Again after couple of
months of preparation, put that into sleep, always had excuse to skip the lab
preparation :)
3) Between year 2007 and 2008 was doing my CCDP and also part of CCSP,then
suddenly at the end of year 2008,I thought in year 2009 atleast I should
attempt the CCIE lab once ,whether I pass it or not.So reappeared for the
CCIE written in Feb year 2009 and cleared the same.
4) Once the written was completed ,fortunately found my old friendswho are
also trying to clear the lab exam,we all combined and made a decision
that,we should give a best shot
5) My preparation for lab started IE 10 Day Videoon Demand
Technology, initially I thought would complete all the 10 day content and
would jump the real workbook ,but it took me long to complete this,so I
switched between VOD and going through the lab workbooks.
6) First I went through IE Vol II Technology workbooks and went through each
tecnology by just seeing the task and judging the answers(No practise)
..This gave me a feel, where I am and what to prepare more.
7) Then in my office PC loaded the GNS and did most of the technology labs
in that workbook except switching. This is the time I really learned lots of
stuff,I mean lots of stuff with help of Group Study and google.
8) Then went to appear for first bootcamp, where I felt very good(may not
relatively good fom others perspective) about Switching,Frame
Relay ,IGP,BGP(My favourite :)..) ..I was ok with router QOS but not the
3550/3560 mls qos,bad at multicast,ipv6,IOS features and security.This is
the time it mad me to think,I have to really prepare for multicast, qos and
security,sort of ignored IOS features..I don't know why ........
9) Went through the IP multicast ,QOS and security cisco press books...This
was very hard to me because it took long time to finish but it made me to
understand many
10) Then jumped to IE vol5 full labs --did around 4 full labs --thats the
time i started feeling pretty decent about that
11) Meantime I went through many(Don't worry about wording many --i may be
exeggarating here) subdocuments shared by my friends for the preparation
12) I forget to mention one thing, when I preparing from start,I made an XLS
sheet,consisting points which i should remember,out of which I made 600
flash cards with help of my wife.Which I think its a great revision tool
13) I bought CCIE command memorizer,a tool which is good to use even though
i didn't use it for full
14) Meantime jumped back to the IE Vol II full labs and glanced around 4
full labs
15) Doc CD was just my reference point upto this point and didn't use it as
primary reaing content (My bad )
16) Another bad thing is ,I didn't went through RFCs
17) So when the exam was nearing a month back ,reattended the bootcamp and
this time it was soo effective,I could really do well with multicast, qos
....About security I did know the concepts but was missing peices while
solving the task
18) After this bootcamp,I started giving proper attention to OEQs,DOC cd
19) Honestly during the whole course I like to pass the lab exam but was not
sure will clear it,even before attempting the lab exam I was preparing to
the second attempt,my friends were criticising me about that :) ...........
20) I bought narbiks workbook and I would say thats the easiest to through
,may be possible since I went through the great content of IE Workbooks but
nothing to take away from narbik workbook. It was well written and went
through the same as a refresher.
21) One thing I did well was ,tried to understand as muych as
possible..obviously went overboard but timne pressure brought me back .....
The above way is how I went through the preparation..I am sure beated around
the bush ...Hopefully gave some points
*LAB Attempt*
**
1) Last one week was the hardest I have to face because of physcic, upto that
point I didn't felt chance of passing the lab but suddently felt chance, that
itself was a dangerous thing..last one week I couldn't sleep well,was reaing
wheatever I could, without roper planning and stuff..even before lab
night, didn;t thoroughly went bed upto 2 am ....ofcourse these are signs fo
clearly failing ...but lucklily passed it .....
2) On the lab day,as soon as I recieved the terminal,I was asked to give the
OEQs,I went through the first question and gave a 10 mins explanation, second
one around 10 mins ,3rd one 8 mins, forth one 1 min .....Clearly bad time
management, then immediately logged of before the 30 mins
3) When I was asked to relogin to my respective POD,i saw the example given
to me and logged on the wrong pad as given to me ...hahaha what a dump
person I am ...I am seeing the preconfigs didn't match as it is supposed to
be and went to Howard(Procotor) after 15 mins and askd is there any issue
with my pod as the loopback didn't match ...then later found out I logged
into a wrong pod ...clearly a bad start ...sorry to mention you all
thenegative side of my lab attempt but this is how it went .Hopefully you
would be able to overcome
4) Then drew my layer 2 diagram ,I like diagrams-even when i practise ,I
atleast have 5 diagrams for a full lab(Layer 2,IGP,BGP,IPV6,Multicast)
5) I had many questions in the task and went to howard and he was so nice to
explain me things ,when I was confused, even he gave me(or me able to
understand that way) a sort fo glimpse that I am going in right direction
for the task
6) Every task looked clearl familiar because of the preperation and when the
lunch was called I didn;t even complete IGP and so the
redistribution....Another issue but I was slow steady..I was tracking the
points
7) Once came from lab ,I took around solid 1 hour to complete eigrp and
redistribution section..i asked humpty questioins and able to finish it
properly .....This is the time I felt I would not be able to finsih the lab
..fear rised and I rushed like anything,I went htough
IPV6,QOS,multicast,part of security and jumping between BGP and security
....With one hour remaining I finished the lab with exception of one task,,I
couldn't beleive .....Most time toook because ,my verification process is
lengthier ........
8) After that I diddn;t even tried to attempt that task and ran the ping
script which I rean before the lunch but with addition of extra ip's to
verify the full reachability ..everything went fine ..multicast worked like
champ(i was so happy :) ...)
9) But the last one hour,i really gave up,my mind didn't allowed to me
verify what I did,i verified upto half of IGP and then always tried to
escape from the lab,may be because of last night half sleep..but lucky seems
everything worked as it supports to be as I passed :) ...But these things
really needed to be avoided ..........
This was my lab attempt eperinece ..after finishing lab at 3;30pm until
8:00pm when I got the result ,my mind of trying to find what could went
wrong instead of what all right :) ..............
Hopefully conveyed you something ...please overcome the above, its really
painful otherwise .But don't worry about the exam,be well prepared and
everything should be great ..Its all my mistake and nothing tough about the
exam itself ....
