The course books for the CCDP exam show lots of best practices in regards to L2/L3 design, etc.
Nothing wrong with writing your own, but, the CCDP books should cover some of what you are looking for.

not bad, but I've haven't seen anything that is a best practices guide per se. Most of the docs are explainations of features. So, I'm gonna have to write one! And I'm gonna cover switching standards to CCIE level. Its gonna be wicked so watch this space.
