Exact question same as I wrote it
The default gateway address to be used by VLAN 40 hosts is 120.100.40.254. The
standby

routers should not learn the standby address.

the strange thing that there was only 2 routers..anyway its coming from the
doc cd...fair enough for me

  Wait, what?

  I don't understand:

  Rack1R4#show standby
  Ethernet0/1 - Group 1
    State is Listen
Virtual IP address is 155.1.146.100 (learnt)
Active virtual MAC address is 0000.0c07.ac01
Local virtual MAC address is 0000.0c07.ac01 (v1 default)
Hello time 3 sec, hold time 10 sec
    Authentication text "CISCO"
    Preemption disabled
Active router is 155.1.146.1, priority 120 (expires in 9.500 sec)
    Standby router is unknown ===========================================>>
if your router is the 3rd one and using same group and couldnt authenticate so
the router wont know the ip
    Priority 80 (configured 80)
IP redundancy name is "hsrp-Et0/1-1" (default)

I'd love to see the original question.

    This may help....

    Authentication

The HSRP authentication feature consists of a shared clear-text key
contained within the HSRP packets. This feature prevents the lower
priority
router from learning the standby IP address and standby timer values from
    the higher priority router.

To configure the HSRP authentication string, use the standby
authentication
    *string* command.
