You're right on, as long as your remember that has to be in the BGP table first, you'll save yourself a LOT of time (as it seems you've already figured out).

Am I right in saying that with BGP advertise-map the route that you track
with the exist-map or non-exist-map needs to be a BGP route? It doesn't seem
clear in the doco but I'm trying here to track loopbacks and stuff and it's
not working, yet I can track BGP routes.
