Tag's are a value you assign to a route so that you can determine where it
came from. Such as redistributing a route into eigrp you would use a
route-map to set a tag. Then at another router redistributing eigrp into
another protocol you would use that tag to determine that you don't want to
put it into the other protocol or perhaps only those routes you want to
redistribute. They can also be used with eigrp itself via distribute-lists
to determine if they should continue on in your network, or if they should
even be accepted.
