Well, so long as R2 does not have any other interfaces in another area, you
don't need a virtual-link here -- Area 1 is directly adjacent to area 0.
Regarding this command, what platform and IOS are you using? I am not
familiar with the command "show ip ospf route" and it is not in the 12.4
master index or router command references.

i was trying with simple 3 router topology for configuring virtual links .
why does area 0 appear in the following output instead of
area 1 in IA inter area route

topology (ro(172.16.23.0 area 0)--->r1(172.16.123.0 area 1)----->r2

r0#show ip ospf route
