ccie LAB validity period

Hi everybody,
I have heard that ccie lab validity expires after 2 years , but i read
somewhere that even after 2 years they suspend your ccie number and you have
a chance of 1 year more to clear ccie written and get back your number . so
eefectively its 3 yers , how true is that ?
