If you're only going to be in country for a couple of days, there's no
reason to check your luggage. In fact, on most airlines it's more
expensive to do so! If you do NOT check your luggage, Sydney's airport
is really fairly simple. Go out through customs, go to the basement and
catch the train (much cheaper than taxi!).
This train will take you downtown, at which point you'll need to
transfer to get to St. Leonard's area. But still very easy to get to!
But I'd agree getting there a day or two ahead of time, especially if
you have timezones to go through!
