"There should be a better way...."
There is. Build and develop that core knowledge throughout the course of
your studies. Take no shortcuts, dig into and question everything, lab it
often and lab it again, and never stop learning. Utilize all your resources
and learn how to assess your own skill set. Recognize your weaknesses and
learn how to improve on them.
This is the most efficient way I know, and it worked for me.
