Re: Cisco Announced change to R&S

I would absolutely relish a lab scenario where troubleshooting was a
major block of points. I love the concept of the proctors pre-
configuring stuff that any monkey can be trained to do and then
focusing more on what you know and what you've learned over the years
vs. how fast you can bang out memorized lines of config in response to
static task language (let's face it, if as an employer you need an
EtherChannel configured, do you want to pay a CCIE to go do that or an
NA/NP?). Overall, I think a lot of the more seasoned experts would do
much better with this format the anything seen lately in the CCIE
program.

But Cisco would need to send out their corporate jet to get me all the
way back out to SJC or RTP just to maintain a vendor certification.
And I'd have to send them a quote for my time that would otherwise be
billed as consulting services. LOL, I'd make them pay it 90 days in
advance - NONREFUNDABLE thank you very much!

I personally find the idea laughable that Cisco would go around de-
certifying existing CCIEs who don't make maintaining the cert the
central focus of their lives throughout their entire working careers.
But who knows? Maybe there's a middle ground? I'd like to start my
own rumor here and now. Based on my "inside
information" (SSSHHHHH!!!!), I have come to know that CCIE numbers
will in the future be awarded with a version number. So if you're a
only a v1, v2, or v3 CCIE (you can have as many as you pass a lab
for), maybe you need not apply for an MPLS-intensive position - v4 IEs
only please! Unless, of course, you also happen to hold some recent
version of the SP track. ;~)

OK, back on the ground here. One thing that a whole lot of people
tend to forget is that Cisco is a for-profit corporation. Every
single decision they make is evaluated against the bottom line. The
CCIE program is no exception! The channel partners move the product.
The channel partners are not going to stand idly by while their
current crop of CCIEs are decertified because they missed the
corporate jet back out to SJC or down to Sydney. They are not going
to stand for their CCIEs spending all of their time preparing for the
next version of the lab vs. going out and moving product - CISCO'S
PRODUCT. Nor is Cisco, for that matter. Folks, don't be distracted
by those with agendas and axes to grind. These flights of fantasy
quickly wither in the face of a little common sense.

Incidentally, I think the new blueprints for both the written and the
lab absolutely rock! Cisco really nailed this one out of the ballpark
(I'm even willing to forgive the persistence of FR because I'm so
impressed with what they've come up with). ;~)
