FYI,
I have built a dynamips setup on an old 6U server with vertical PCI
slots stuffed with NICs and hung two 3550s and two 3560s off of it and
emulated a full IPExpert lab. The .net config with the "clouds" in GNS3 was
a bear but it can be done. It was during my early days when I was wasting
too much time on linux and not enough time on IOS but it can be done. Ping
me offline if you want to discuss....

I agree.
Countless ppl have passed their CCIE thanks to dynamips.
I use dynamips myself, (as do many others), and we all could not do without
it.
For many instances, all you need is to put switchports into trunks or
access
links, there is no difference between using dynamips and using a real rack,
at least at the stage where u need to learn the technology.
Racks come in useful of course when u have switching tasks that dynamips
cant do, and I have used cconline racks when doing them.
That being said, a fair few ppl hook up real 3550s/3560s to their dynamips,
in which case there probably is no need to rent a rack.
No real switches hooked up to my setup, so its rack rentals for me when I
need them :)
