BGP table-map

One of the videos that came with the CCIE prep package I purchased claims
that the
BGP "table-map" command/feature allows you to filter routes between the
BGP RIB and the routing table. Everthing that I find on the internet about
it states
that it's used to:
"modify metric and tag values when the IP routing table is updated with BGP
learned routes...".

I've tried using it to filter routes in the RIB from being placed in the
routing table but it doesn't work.

What am I missing?
