RE: CDP

Just because there is a question, doesn't mean there is a correct answer (or
that I know it). J

From the information provided, the question needs us to define a 5 minute
hold time which cannot be done as the hold time fits into an 8-bit value
(which measures seconds). The CDP hold time is sent between neighbors in the
TTL field (a 1 byte field) of a CDP packet. This value specifies how long
the information should be stored for. It can never be set above 255 (4min
15sec) based on the current frame format, unless Cisco have invented some
kind of CDP Hold Time TTL multiplier command I don't know about, that
multiplies the value in the field when the packet is recieved.

Jared,

Am re-writing the Qs Paul asked in here couple of days back.

(Q) : All neighbour devices of SW4 must hold cdp information 5 minutes. (
neighboring device of SW4 are SW1 / SW2 / R1 / R2 )

Ryan is pointing that as the max parameter which can be configured is 255
sec implies that the hold time is 4 mins and 15 secs !

So how do we go about this Qs ?

Consensus? The command will accept a maximum parameter of 255 so 4min 15sec
is the maximum configurable value.

Is that the consensus then? 4 mins and 15 seconds is the max?

Has anyone put in one a switch or router and just labbed it up?
