CCIE SP - Basic Question

Hello Experts,

I have question when configuring 2 routers connected via CellModeATM router..

Most people use sub-interfaces for eg: "int atm 3/0.1 mpls" to have a basic
connectivity b/w 2 routers via CellModeATM router.
Is that not possible to use physical interfaces instead of sub interfaces.

And even for pinging just the directly connected CellMode ATM router interface
why do we use the command "mpls atm-control 1 64 "& "mpls ip".
Basically we say mpls is normally to avoid using BGP in core network, but why
do we use "mpls atm-control 1 64 "& "mpls ip" just for basic connectivity.
I know 1 and 64 are used like DLCI numbers in Frame-relay but not able to find
what does "mpls" keyword do in the command "mpls atm-control 1 64" to provide
basic connectivity.

Could you please someone help.

Thanks,
Vignesh
