According to Cisco:
-If both ends of the line support autonegotiation, it is highly recommended
the setting is auto
-If one interface supports auto but the other end does not, configure duplex
and speed on *both *interfaces. Do not use auto on the side that does
support it.
For example, if you have a router with an ethernet interface that supports
10/100 but only one duplex setting, then you would hard set both the switch
and router. The same goes for an interface that would support one speed but
full or half duplex. In this case you would also "hard" set the switch and
router interfaces.
