OK lets try with an example. Lets say you have a catalyst switch. Ports 1-5 have hosts on them that are running some insane legacy protocol that is not IP like say DECNET. Ports 6-10 have hosts running Appletalk or some such thing. Ports 1-5 are in VLAN 10 and ports 6-10 are in VLAN 20. You want all the hosts to be able to communicate. You can bridge VLAN 10 and VLAN 20. The switch can't route DECNET and appletalk between VLANs (or at all I don't think) but it can bridge them.
