NHRP is used w/ multipoint GRE. Since a mGRE network is a NBMA
(non-broadcast/multicast capable) network then you must use another tool to
allow for such a need. NHRP is a client/server model. The NHS is the
server and is the hub device of the multi-point tunnel. The spokes are the
clients and they "register" with the server, aka NHS. The server keeps
track of all this in a database within IOS.
Without NHRP, a mGRE network will fail to properly pass traffic, things like
EIGRP will break without NHRP becuase of it's multicast enhancements (with
NHRP you tell the spokes to send ALL of their multicast traffic to the
unicast address of the hub router (the NHS).i
