Beau Williamson said this but there isn't really a PIM version 1.5, that was
just a nickname as far as I know to keep the history of the methods
straight. Auto-RP can be used with both PIMv1 and PIMv2 so it wouldn't be
advisable to make an assumption here (or anywhere else for that matter).
Auto-RP is a stand-alone protocol that is not integrated into PIM, which is
why it can operate with both versions. BSR is a part of PIMv2 so it will
only support that version of PIM. Also, Auto-RP is proprietary but BSR is a
standards-based protocol so if you're mixing with non-Cisco gear you should
stay with BSR.
Here's a good link:

Subject: PIM Version 2
Hi All,
If requirement is to use PIM version 2 , is it saying indirectly that BSR
should be used here ?
As per my understanding,
1) PIM version 1 to use static RP
2) PIM version 1.5 to use auto-rp
3) PIM version 2 to use BSR
Kindly correct me if this is wrong.

Raul
