RE: New CCIE logo

Actually, I agree with you to a degree, Yandy. Fully extend that philosophy
and the same can actually be said about certifications as a whole, to an
extent.

It just strikes me as more than a little wacky that Cisco has taken this
path, though. The original CCIE logo is one of the most recognizable in the
industry, if not >the< most recognizable. Would Mercedes be foolish enough
to abandon their globally recognizable logo? Would Polo punt to a rodeo
cowboy or a mule pulling a plow? Would Rolex roll to an alarm clock icon?
Would the Olympics 86 their colorful rings? Of course not, because that
would be brandicide.

I'm not really big into vendor wear but I do have a collection of CCIE
shirts and a light jacket that I wear. Why? Because I'm an independent
consultant and it's very effective and affordable marketing at events,
conventions, etc. Also, it's a great conversation piece - CCIEs like to
chat with other CCIEs and CCIE candidates love to talk to CCIEs. I'm all
too happy to hash the pros and cons of home labs, vendor training materials,
etc with anybody who has an interest. Were I to wear this new monstrosity
around, from any distance at all, how would anybody distinguish me from the
CCENT standing next to me? So by diminishing their own brand, Cisco by
extension diminishes the brand of those of us who have earned the cert. For
some of us, that goes very directly to the bottom line. Hence the seemingly
hyper-sensitivity of some of us! Like so many things, it can be distilled
down to a matter of dollars and cents.

It also just seems to be lacking from a practicality perspective, BTW. Were
I to add SP to my collection of certs, which logo would I chose? LOL, maybe
we'll go the biker route and wear leather vests covered in "ride patches."
I can put SP right next to my Sturgis 2009 patch (not that I was actually
there or have such a patch, mind you)!

It's been brought to my attention that the CCDE logo is every bit as
repulsive and indistinguishable from all of the others, so that shoots holes
in my conspiracy theory that Cisco is blending all of the "lower" certs into
an indistinct mush. I still don't like it and none of those monstrosities
will be appearing on any of my stuff.

I try to stay on topic to the greatest extent possible, and this is
borderline - certainly it's not of much interest to anybody with an upcoming
lab date. So I'll shut up now and try to answer a few technical posts in
the coming days as an atonement to the list...

Regards,

Scott

Why are people making such a big deal out of logos? Seriously, because
the logo is uglier does not mean that you'll be valued any less.
You'll make the same amount of money as long as your talents don't get
uglier ;) which is what counts at the end of it all.
