Piotr,
Jonny wouldn't have a SSN, not being a resident of the US. This is related
to the H1B program, which involves work visa application fees. Having
looked at the specific firm involved, I'm pretty skeptical myself at this
point. But I don't think you can just say out of hand that this is
automatically a non-starter for someone looking to come to the US and work
as a non-immigrant. Visas always involve an exchange of money - I have
personally paid thousands of dollars over the years in travel and work visa
fees for consulting and integration work done abroad. And often times the
bureaucracy is too overwhelming to be successfully navigated by a lone
individual, so hiring *reputable* experts is not always unwise. In fact,
sometimes the system is intentionally rigged to be just so! When I traveled
to a large Eurasian country a few years back, I had to be officially invited
by a government agency. Although I was working with one having to do with
security, I was instructed to pursue a visa via any of a number of private
expediters. As I recall, my "invitation" came from some off-the-wall
ministry having to do with athletics or something (certainly NOT the
ministry I was there to see). It was bizarre and a little disconcerting
from my perspective but it was apparently just par for the course - I sailed
right through Customs & Immigration both coming and going.

Like Marko said hang up. No one should be asking you for money.
Also please be aware of what information you provide over the phone or via
email, name, address, social security number..... <--- for us based no one
should be asking for your social security number.
