Does that not result in a rather large CPU spike depending on the interface
loading..?

CEF can do it with your same AD static routes, if traffic is between same pair
of src/dst, configure it per packet (ip load-sharing per-packet)

there was a limitation for number of CEF entires, cant remember now (based on
nexthop) ... if bandwidth is different between links I would go for
bandwidth-proportinal loadbalancing with bgp dmzlink-bw
