Ospf - abr

Guys,
How do I get around this? An abr router with tunnel in area 0 and g0/0 in area 1. So this abr will advertise a default route into area 1.

When the serial line goes down is when I have the issue. Since the physical serial isn't participating in ospf, the router maintains its abr status. The tunnel is still up/up and the router continues to inject the default route but the traffic is dropped because the serial link is down.
The tunnel is multipoint, so I can't use gre keepalives. The tunnel source is the loopback, so the tunnel will stay up no matter what the status of the serial is.

Any suggestions to get around this config??

Ron
