OT Re: CCIE True Interview Story

Adam,

I've been to a lot of interviews. A lot. Probably more than the norm
here. I get a lot of job solicitations. A lot. Again, more than I'd think
is normal.

Now I can tell you I've been on interviews where I've been asked questions
from one end of my resume to the other. I've also been asked things that I
felt were totally out of the scope of things I'd ever done, but somehow the
person on the other seemed to think obscurity was relevant. I've been asked
questions that I felt were not worth my time or ability and I answered them
as such.

No I do not answer every question every time. Nope. Did I get the job
offer? Usually, about 90-95% of the time: Yes (I don't count the one that
ask me CCNA-only stuff or obscure stuff the guy on the other end was asking
to puff up his/her ego - since I kinda blow those off when I come across
them... Sorry if you know who you are.).

Most of the time in an interview, I think it best to answer the question
with as much detail as you can, asking for clarification where needed, and
presenting options where you feel there might be forks in the road.

I also try to get a feel for what the organization might think is important
and then I present the solution in the present tense as well as in the first
person with how I might go about solving the problem, seeking consensus, and
finally finding resolution or where I might go in the event I've exceeded my
own abilities and resources... i.e. Do I know where and when to ask for
help?

That's a big question. Ego is good but it hurts too if we can not temper
it.

I just left a contract where Ego reigns supreme and and an eye for eye left
them blinded... it happens and they probably think they are better for it.
It happens.

One question that often gets left out of technical interviews is how we deal
with our contractors and vendors. This is crucial since we will no doubt
influence spending money, time, and resources in this area. In the
engagement referenced earlier, they paid several hundred thousand dollars to
a Cisco Gold Partner and the "ego" of the "I wanna be a CCNA when I grow up"
always seemed to think that the support from the Gold Partner was "clueless"
and so he always wanted to be escalated even before he saw the issue at
hand.

One might consider this reckless and a waste of a lot of money. But hey...
most Fortune 500's have a ton of it, right?

Back to the interview. Call me crazy but I do not "WANT" every job I've
applied to "AFTER" the interview. Nope, some things are better to walk away
from. Always be prepared to walk away from an offer just like you might
from a Car Salesman. And alaways consider how that offer is going to affect
you in the future.

Does this help a bit?

This is OT, so hit me unicast if if you need more help on this one.
