Re: CCIE True Interview Story

To be honest, I have heard similar tales of CCIE's interviewed in the USA?

Would anyone be surprised to learn of CCIE's who do not summarize properly
or efficiently in enterprise networks, do not use SSH as a standard
operating procedure whenever and wherever possible, or who are known to have
just "plugged it in, got it working, got paid, and left"... etc. No
optimization nor customization and Vlan is a norm?

Now a lot of you might be shell-shocked and quite taken to imagine that
CCIE's who implemented networks may forget or not do these things and others
or forget to instruct their co-workers, etc.

But imagine that the network was deployed by CCIE's 10+ years ago, 6+ years
ago... now imagine 3+ years ago.

Not one of them in fact but several or more of them, not in the Middle East,
not in China, not Kansas, or even in Alabama or Mississippi... but mostly
in a lot of places nationwide right here in the ole USA and got paid nice
rates to do it this way.

I'm not kidding here. This is reality TV. Not followng any sort of best
practice with Spanning-Tree or just disabling it altogether, static routes,
and lack of any sort of best practices or apparent standards.

So while the name this time was Ali, it very well could have been Steve,
Frank, John, Jim or Harold.

Now we are all probably murmuring that we might have done it better given
more time or simila resources, but when would that be exactly?

I've worked on enough networks to promise you that people who do not have
time to do it right the first time, probably will never get time to go back
and make it right later. Usually does not happen that way. I'm not going
to say never, but I'd say more often than not it just does not happen like
that.

The think I like most about my career is that I get the opportunity to
constantly improve myself. I make mistakes and make myself promises to get
better in one fashion or another. I'm not sure everyone approaches the job
or life like that.

So let's not nationalize, since that would arbitrarily make more people
wrong than it would ever make right.

I'm sure other CCIE's have had their hands full or been outright overwhelmed
and needed to get out try to find a new playground to start afresh for
whatever reason (hopefully more $$$). But hey whatever ya gotta do, right?

Again, having worked for 2 larger 500,000 plus companies and with quite a
few engineers and administrators by now, I've ran into the good, the bad,
and the ugly. I assure we all probably think we are better than we are,
tell others, and some of us will even try to live up to our own expectations
and sometimes we just get too busy with this or that and play catch up.

See it's not just one person or people of one nationality. Rocks come from
all places around the world in all sorts of shapes, colors, and sizes.

But don't worry I don't think Rocky Balboa or Forrest Gump were rocket
scientists either. A lot can be said for determination and stamina.
