Hi All,
I am working in the UAE, and as far as job options are concerned being a
CCIE, you don't have any problems for job, but i do agree some companies
have freezed their hiring because of the global economic slowdown. But the
effect here is minimal or not yet started in full swing :), specially in oil
rich abu dhabi emirate.
The place is good with unlimited and unique entertainment, leasure and
shopping options. Safety is not an issue. Cars are cheap, like bmw's and
range-rovers are mostly the favorites. Fuel is cheap, almost 2.5 USD a
gallon.
Technically speaking, the problem is most of the people you interact are not
of technical background but they are sitting with extremely technical
designations and in the end you get frustrated that where the hell you are
stuck. Specially in Network Design and Security.
I have faced some problems when i moved in here and this would also answer
why now i am trying to move onto the European or US market, let me share
with you the problems.
- Technical Growth gets stuck, because i barely find any time free to
study as the time gets wasted in either commuting or traffic-jams.
- On the job, learning is limited as the work is repeated most of the
time.
- Most of the projects, even the smaller ones have uncapped budgets which
defeats the purpose of optimization. For example an average company would
not have any problems buying up Bluecoat proxysg 8100, even if they dont
haveany requirements for it.
- Traffic, on an average 2 - 4 hours per day you have to get stuck. In my
opinion, the time you are spending on street is wasted as its not given to
work or family. In this case, we usually work 8 hours, may be 10 hours some
times, get 8 hours sleep which barely leaves sometime being spent with the
family.
- You can't find the accommodation in the house-allowance the company
gives you. For doing some saving you have to move either to some other
emirate and waste more time or move into the accommodation that takes 50% of
your salary in advance for the full year.
- Since their is no train system yet introduced, every expat is buying a
car as first priority which is creating traffic, parking and saturation
issues.
- Although there is no Tax on the income but you end up saving the same
amount of money which you would save in other regions.
- The Internet access is still immature and highly dominated by a single
player, the average dsl speeds avaiable are 256k, 512k and 1M, at the cost
of 70 USD per month for 512k with extremely limited upload of 128k.
Thats all i can think of right now, in the end, it is totally my personal
opinion and some people would agree and some may disagree.
