An interesting feature which has lots of uses. For ip sla and track look
into Ivan Pepelnjak's paper on redundant small site homing. Aside from
getting more from static routes by object tracking he aludes to other uses
including metric of an IP route and availability of mobile IP home agent or
GPRS nodes.
