One that I can remember from the top of my head is GPRS roaming where
traffic is usually exchanged over GPRS Roaming Exchange (GRX) points
or direct peering, similarly to Internet. One difference is that AS
numbers in use there are not assigned by "IANA-appointed" RIR's (ARIN,
RIPE NCC, APNIC, etc.), but GSM Forum. Now, some of us who run modern
networks (sometimes dubbed NGN) don't have separate infrastructure for
Internet, GPRS, etc. but rather use the same multiservice transport
network for it all. In order to exchange GPRS traffic, we need to hide
our real AS number and present one assigned by GSM Forum. Silly.

Another example would be if a carrier/service provider is providing
transport for another service provider who absolutely insists that
carrier's carrier network is not visible by 3rd parties. That was all
external peerings may be done with carrier's ASN.
