It depends on spec, and country, which approves the spec.
You have to read the IEEE spec for wireless.
In general, 802.11b/g allows 11/13 channels depending on country.
Some country allows 13 channels, and others allow 11 channels.
Usually 802.11b/g recommend not to use neighboring channels.
If you use channel 1, then use channel 4 close to this one.
But that's why you need site survey.
