RE: VTP question

Hi Omkar,

Regardless of what the documentation tells us, my experience was that either
a Ver 1 or Ver 2 switch in transparent mode will forward advertisements if
and only if:

1. The VTP domain names match
2. The transparent switch has a null VTP domain name

I checked my IEWB Vol I notes from the switching section and I apparently
was grousing about this very same subject a little over a year ago. Ran a
series of experiments with various things in Ver 1 and Ver 2, with and
without matching domain names, with null domain names, etc. Pretty much
arrived at the same conclusion as you. And I believe this does come up here
on the list fairly often and the outcome is ultimately identical to what
you've discovered.

Sometimes the documentation is not very clear. Sometimes the documentation
is just plain wrong.

Regards,

Scott

Subject: VTP question

I apologize if this has been repeated.

Practical Studies: Switching mentions that if a switch is running vtp
version 2 and is transparent then it will forward VTP advertisements
received on its trunk ports even if the VTP domain does not match.
I tested this and it did not work. Then I thought that it might have to do
with having to auto-negotiate the trunk links because DTP was complaining
about the domain mismatch so I forced the links to be trunks and disabled
negotiation but still the VTP messages were not forwarded by the transparent
switch with different VTP domain.
