A Bit OT: CCNA LAB

Then yes, absolutely. I've always felt the labs in the various curriculums out
there are somewhat disconnected. You learn individual skills but aren't really
tested on it all together.

I think this would be very valuable at the NA and SP levels. This is the point
at which people still have significant skill gaps and KNOWING that they can
set up a network with a VTP domain, VLANs, router NAT'n to the outside,
perhaps some basic firewall and IPS, etc.... would be a huge confidence boost
in both the test and on the job.

I am not advocating adding this to an actual exam but having it as a
required part of a preparation course/group...

In a perfect world this would be so. Certs start with the goal of proving a
level of competency. If the cert becomes valuable, the goal becomes only to
pass the test and get the cert. Which (in the mind of the pass4sure king)
allows him to get the job. As several others have mentioned there is a
weeding out process in interviews, 90 day trial employment, etc... For my
first strictly network engineering interview I was sat in front of a laptop,
switch and console cable, then given a list of tasks. How is that for a lab?

But, imagine the cost of having every pearson vue training center with
switches, routers, proctors, etc... Not really economical. You would have to
virtualize the equipment and still have someone to watch over the labs. I
think the best we'll see for a while is the simlet type questions from the
xxSP that test specific tasks.

I have been toying with an idea that I believe would help those striving to
reach the CCNA level.

As a fellow CCIE, I have a profound appreciation for the process involved in
preparing for and passing the lab. To me, it stands to reason that an
appropriately scaled CCNA level lab would really solidify the principles
needed to pass the exam and understand all the concepts involved.

Thoughts?
