A first time pass is very good going indeed but some very capable people
take a few attempts to clear the lab. Preparation and *some* luck on the day
are factors. No doubt there are many others as each candidate's
approach/prep will vary in a myriad of ways.

Either way getting the CCIE is certainly an accomplishment.
