IPTV seems to be driving increasing customer interest in multicast, a
few years ago there wasn't much demand for it.
As Raul has said, MSDP together with mBGP are used on many ISP networks
for IPv4 multicast. The MSDP protocol has some performance/security
issues and is not being used for IPv6 multicast. Very few ISPs networks
are configured for IPv6 multicast and few (if any) make it available as
a production service.
My understanding is that MBONE was based on GRE tunnels with DVMRP and
so was not suitable for high speed multicasting; think the project was
ceased last year but you will still find plenty of good documentation
about it on the web.
