Re: OT- Most thoroughly tested IOS and FW software

One of the labs at Cisco is CPOC- Customer Proof of Concept Labs. As the
name implies, you as a customer book slot to perform testing at one of the
Cisco sites. The customer with the assistance of CPOC Engineer sets the
testbed up and the testing is performed by the customer at Cisco site with
CPOC Engineers assistance.

SIT (System Integration Test) groups for various platforms perform
integration testing based on their major customer requirements for the
different software releases (or at least thats what they tend to claim,
unless proven otherwise). Code tends to hit SIT after it has passed several
DevTest cycles. Both SIT and DevTest testings are mostly automated, and are
done by Cisco only. Unless you happen to be a major major customer (like
some big SP etc), you might get some Pre-FCS code thats going through SIT to
test out in your own labs etc, and report bugs to Cisco for them to get
fixed in next release. Again this is something thats very customer
specific...

There are other groups like NSITE, Financial Test Labs (6500 platform) etc
within Cisco that perform customer specific feature and solution testing. At
NSITE and FTL the testing is done by Cisco, and you as a customer get the
end-result output, so you the customer dont perform the actual testing
yourself.

I am not sure about voluntary customer participation to perform testing. I
am assuming that unless its a real new product and/or major new OS code
where Cisco might want to beta-try it out with some select major customers
first, you probably wouldnt be 'voluntarily' invited :-)

Cisco's Advanced Services group has also started offering Testing as a
'Service' recently by targeting several high-profile SP customers for whom
Cisco would perform testing and get paid to do so. So you not only have to
pay Cisco to buy the hardware, pay for the code and then pay Cisco to find
and fix those bugs that Cisco produces, all at customers expense :-).
