Re: very OT: this is ridiculous!

We are the audience of the American and the International media. We have
been made to believe that Russia is a FORMER Superpower. What we haven't
been told is how POWERFUL is a *former* superpower. Its not like when you
lose your superpower status you return to being a banana republic? Certainly
not in the case of Russia. Russia is still strong, strong enough to rule the
roost in its own backyard.

Georgia and Ukraine stepped out of line. They underestimated Russia, became
too independent, so it was only a matter of time that they paid back. More
like it was a matter of opportunity on Russia's part. Also interesting is
the fact that its highly profitable for Uzbekistan and Kyrgzstan to allow US
to operate air bases in their respective countries but every now and then
these countries go beserk and demand that US withdraw its troops.
Why? Pressure from ABOVE, from Lord Himself, and of course from Kremlin.

Another aspect, good or bad, is that President Medvedev seems all set to
take the country a step ahead in the direction of Patriotism (though in
my experience Russians are already a little too patriotic). Now what good is
an army that hasn't had a good fight in 15-20 years? When a war is on,
people get drunk, feel patriotic, and forget their own troubles. But my
Russian friends, please don't take offense because there is nothing wrong
with this strategy. It has been used by ALL superpowers and all good
emperors in history. Its good for the national morale. Especially if the war
looks winnable, which this one certainly does.
