If you are talking about switching and routing loops,
L2 Loop ---- Switching loop, can be avoided by spanning tree protocol.
L3 Loop ---- Routing loop in distacnce vector protocol (RIP , IGRP), for
avoidance go through split-horizon,triggered update, poison reverse and hold
down timers, else use a link-state protocol. In two-way redistribution , you
can prevent routing loops by modifying AD,metric and tagging.
