You've received a bunch of useful replies that seem to focus on the
security clearance process in the United States. Note that while there
will be some similarities, every country and even market (e.g. local
vs federal government) will be different.
If you're not in the US, you should clarify, as you might discover you
need to undergo a full body cavity search in some locations and it
would be best if you went packing some lube.
