I can see some sense in it, for example you want to monitor your up status and if your provider is not having any issues farther than your immediate link. You can have an sla setup pinging your own nic, if replies are coming that means your end-to-end connectivity is there...

While that is true, I fail to see how that is relevant in any
production environment. The ability of a router to ping its own
interface is pretty useless.

Unless you are in CCIE lab, that is. In the lab, just make it work and
be sure it still works at 16:00 :-)
