Good choice. It's a great spot. This is the best time of year though
-- I haven't been through a rainy winter yet.

There is no shortage of work, but depending on where you're coming
from, you may be surprised at the low salaries attached to permanent
positions. In general, I found salaries to be about 20% less than they
are in Australia, and with less attractive conditions. Some examples:

- In Australia, 4 weeks annual leave is standard. In Canada, it's 2.
Some companies offer a bit more as a sweetener.
- In Australia, there is a compulsory employer-funded retirement
contribution of 9% of your gross salary. In Canada, I'm still trying
to figure out what's compulsory (if anything) and what's not, but in
any case, similar contributions are much less and from what I've seen,
subject to some odd clauses.

On the other hand, health insurance/benefits appear pretty standard
for a permanent role. (in reality though, how much does this cost?)

Contracting ("consulting") is another way to go. It seems pretty
common here to be a consultant (on either fixed-term, guaranteed
hours, guaranteed rate/hr --or-- working in a more freelance capacity,
perhaps through a small bespoke/consulting outfit).

Use Cisco's Partner Locator (www.cisco.com/go/partnerlocator) to get a
feel for who's active in the local market.

If you have any specific questions, send me a direct e-mail. I'm
pretty new here but I guess I'm a few steps ahead of you :-)

cheers,
Dale
