there the same as the old *nix services, there not really
used anymore as people have found out how to exploit them
to crash the box.

echo: if you telnet to the box on the echo port anything you type
is repeated back to you, it was used instead of writing a simple
echo server for net tests.

chargen: if you telnet to the box on the chargen port it will
just spit random characters at you until you exit with ^]

discard: like echo but sends everything to /dev/null instead of
repeating it back to you

daytime: prints the time

none of these are used anymore really
