Hi John,
there should be no problem with the authentication in case of eigrp, but you might double check if you typed a "SPACE" after the MD5 password.... it just happen sometime;))
In case of RIP it could be that you configured the authentication before defining the Key chain and since you are referring a Key chain which doesn't exist the authentication wont work....I would call this behavior BUG/DDTS but Cisco will argue with "DESIGN DECISION";))

case of eigrp I know that it wa a bug. Now I'm trying to get interface level
authentication to work with rip and am having the same problem. Is this a
