Hey Matt,
I'd definitely agree with Dale here... having faced quite a few issues with
dynamips.. from EIGRP route flaps to one of the dynamip process crashing,
leaving me with 50% redistribution done!!! I can say certainly that you are
unlikely to face that problem with real devices.
However, you do not need 8-15k for a R/S lab (assuming thats what ur working
on...) you can build a normal iewb setup lab for abt 4k.. granted, you may
have to adjust some of the interfaces, but it sure beats the hell out of the
cpu temp going to 70:C+ and ur router suddenly going kaput ;) Dynamips is
perfect to get your speed going in tasks like redistribution etc.. which can
be implemented without have to worry about the meter (or clock) running...
But real devices are not perfect... just a bit more resilient than a single
(or 4!) Intel processors. To be perfectly honest, i'd rather use Dynamips
for l3 and other topics, like qos (non-switch)... instead of setting up vlan
switches, you can setup direct links where it shows a l2 switch and use a
router instance for the l3 switch. That way you can get the practice for
other topics and you can rent a rack for working on your L2 topics... which
isn't very expensive...
Just my $0.02..
Piyoush.
