It would so be simple. Let us take an example within the same octet
xxxxxxxy (if the least significant bit is 1 for sure this is odd number, on
contrast this number is even number if y is 0)
xxxxxxx1 wildcard 254 ==> you match the least significant bit to be 1, so
you guarantee it is an odd octet.
xxxxxxx0 wildcard 254 ==> you match the least significant bit to be 0, so
you guarantee it is an even octet
