Regarding the use of bandwidth, disk space, and CPU clocks, let's be honest,
how much of that are we really consuming here? Look, let's be perfectly
honest. There are just simple text messages here. Are any of us here
really using systems that are so resource-constrained that they can't handle
these simple text messages? Really?
Let me put it to you guys this way. For a couple hundred bucks, I just
bought a hard drive with 1TB of capacity. Think about that - that's
equivalent to the capacity of 50 entire BluRAy high-def discs. My desktop -
which is pretty old now - has more computing capacity than any
supercomputer of just a few decades ago. I have to deal with branch office
locations that often times run cheapo consumer DSL links, and yet the
average utilization of those links, averaged over an entire day, is barely
5%.
Look, let's be honest. Practically all of us are using systems that have
far far more power than we even know what to do with. If you're really
using a system that is so constrained that these text messages are actually
overwhelming your capacity, I think you're acutely overdue for an upgrade.
I think the real issue is that the limiting factor isn't the technical
resources of their system, but rather their attention span. And to that, I
have a simple response - you don't have to read my posts. I don't read most
of the posts coming out of this newsgroup, because they aren't talking about
anything that is interesting to me. For example, there was a recent thread
whose subject title was "Israeli Military Intelligence" (sic). I knew not
to waste my time reading it.
So, look, guys. If you don't like certain posts, fair enough, then don't
read them. If you don't want to discuss a certain topic, then don't
participate. But let the people who want to talk about something be allowed
to do so.
