First of all, i am very very very sorry to prolong this OT thread, but i
couldn't be silent as these words about immigrants have increased in an
irrational and racist way. I have a very simple question for Joe, and all the
US folks considering them selves US native citizens, all of you consider your
fathers and grandfathers eligible to be US citizens, while it happens that
they are immigrants them selves, they came not so long ago and fought the
native owners of the country and took it from them, now why are you
complaining from immigrants, i can understand England or France complaining
from immigrants, but not US which is a country of immigrants, it contains
nothing but immigrants, from 1, 10 or 100 years they are all immigrants, and
by the way "immigrants" is not an insulting word, i believe all of us are
immigrants in a way or another, so please don't misunderstand me.
Please
don't consider my words offensive, i was just trying to understand the
ideology of these racist minds.
Please no more racist replies, try to be the
civilized people you claim.

Wow, we've gone well-off the beaten path....
For
one, english is considered a "global language" as a significant amount
of
worldwide business (and virtually all technical training) is delivered in
english.
However, even though this domain/listserver is based on American
soil, I'm
pretty sure that doesn't guarantee any sovereign rights!
So whether
we're bitching about dialing a specific digit in order to find
someone who
speaks the de facto native tongue or not is really a completely
different
debate.
On the flip side, while yes, it irritates the shit out of me when
people
immigrate to a new country (especially if it's illegal immigration) and
sue
in order to have things done in their former native language which they
left. But that really is a whole different venue. :)
Nobody immigrated to
this list. It just is. This has been going on for a
long time though. I
distinctly remember covering the Olympic Festival in
Los Angeles (circa 1991)
and walking into a McDonalds in downtown LA and not
being able to read the
menu. Thank goodness for the bright idea of picture
menus ('cause I can't
read braille either!). But that wasn't Spanish
believe it or not. It was
Vietnamese. Just happened to be the district I
was in at the time.
Whaddya
do? Bitch and whine, but not here. Call your
senator/representative. In the
meantime, it's our own problem for going
without an official language for 200+
years. :)
