The answer as always is "it depends"
Anyone feel free to correct me here...
In theory you can get more from specializing in a particular discipline such
as Voice or Security, but you have to be careful even with that assumption.
I have known very capable people that have assumed that all they needed to
know was I their discipline and didn't pay much attention to the
foundational elements, yes, R&S. Its amazing on an install how many things
you may run into that require a pretty wide grasp of those principles.
In addition, a lot has to do with the position that you occupy and the
company that employs you. I have spent a lot of time in the presales role
and typically ties a person to some sort of a sales compensation model,
which is a good news/bad news kind of message. On the one hand, you get
compensated from the sales organization in some form which can be lucrative
if things go well. However, if performance is lean by the sales reps
themselves, it can be frustrating. In an installation/support role, you
don't have to rely on those kinds of things beyond your control, but you are
"in the trenches" which can make you a little invisible to the
revenue-generating arm of a company.
Personally, I would ask where you feel you would fit best. At my last
employer, I was pushed into an installation role for which I was not
well-suited and it bugged the CRAP out of me---I prefer the "thrill of the
hunt" on the sales side and lots of interaction with people. Its wasn't
where I fit (I typically mention God at this point and talk about the
purpose and design in my life, but feel free to fill in this spot with
whatever you hold to). The point is to do what you were born to do and what
you are best at...
Just my 6 cents (2 cents adjusted for inflation and cost of living)...

Which CCIE makes the most money ? I would guess Voice or Security. Can I
make 200k-300k with Voice or Security CCIE ?
