I think the basic point (at least by Cisco) is that a layer 3 switch has the
capability to route once and switch many. Routers are generally considered
very slow and switches are generally considered very fast. A layer 3 switch
has the capability to remember what inbound and outbound ports were used for a
specific path and remember this. So, after the router sent the first packet
on it's way, the switch can remember this and switch several more packets down
the same path without asking the router again (for a while, anyway).
