The salary does vary. What also varies is how people take care of their
money. My accountant has a neuro surgeon on his books grossing incredible
amounts of money but he has severe financial issues due to overextending and

is about to go bankrupt.

There are a lot of niche fields that pay substantially more than the CCIE,
but there are way more that pay considerably less. If you really want
*great* money from the CCIE then you probably have to get away from FTE and
even from contracting as a sole provider, because once you get paid by the
hour you are basically selling your life. To get over that, you build a
brand/business where you are not the sole contributor of efforts for which
monies come in i.e you have people working for you and get paid for the
project. This requires a whole different set of skills from making traffic
get to SW2 via SW4 and SW1 and having multiple CCIE's.

It has occurred to me that the time/effort involved in chasing a second IE
may be better spent in building up a business in this regard.

All that said, if you remain a sole provider as a permy or contractor you
can still potentially make a very good living if you get the work in that
pays decent salary/rates and you don't overextend.

Regards
Gary
